History Once part of a larger estate extending to 1,600 acres, Morton House’ illustrious former owners include the Sandars family who were instrumental in building Gainsborough into an official 19th century port through their Maltings & Milling Empire. Samuel Sandars had four sons and six daughters. One son, George Sandars, became a Wakefield mp and also Joseph Sandars mp was the only lobbyist for George Stevenson. Stevensons Rocket 1824 in the Houses of Parliament and Mr Joseph Sandars is recognised as the founding father of the railways by contemporary biographers and historians. History tells of his success in persuading The Houses of Parliament to authorise the construction of the world’s first public railway building and opening the first ever public railway, The Liverpool to Manchester Railway in 1830. Family members headed railway construction worldwide from the very first Liverpool to Manchester railway. J S Sandars was the Private Secretary to the Prime Minister, Lord Arthur Balfour 1892-5. John Drysdale (jd) Sandars was born in 1860 in Morton House. Jd went on to start the first ever car club at in England in Morton in the mid-1890s of which divisions still exist today. The Lincolnshire Car Club is noted as the oldest car club in the UK and some members became founder members of The rac Club of England in 1897. The house was also taken over by the military in both the First and Second World War having connections to the famous Dambusters raid. At least four residents have been High Sheriffs, married into aristocracy, baronesses and one was knighted. Morton House Morton House is set in a secluded listed parkland setting in woodland on the outskirts of the village behind high stone walls and dense trees blocking all views from the road. Morton House is an historic late Georgian country house built in the early 1800s with later 19th century additions. The house featured in Pevsner and is Listed Grade II as being of architectural.
